According to The Associated Press, just after 10 a.m. on Friday in the Del Mar beach area a lifeguard spotted a woman along with her friend as they were heading back to shore after a swim that was about a mile or so away.

Lifeguard chief for the city of Del Mar, Jon Edelbrock, said that the lifeguard noticed that their strokes seemed to have changed and the friend was waving her arms for assistance, according to the AP. They were located about a few hundred yards from the beach.

According to the AP, Edelbrock said the lifeguard didn’t see the shark but was able to get the two people back to the beach.

Edelbrock said a woman was taken to a hospital for treatment for “a puncture and laceration wounds” to her upper thigh, according to the AP. The woman got stitches and has since been recovering.

According to the AP, Edelbrock said the shark may have been a young white shark but officials are waiting for scientists to confirm that. Apparently, young white sharks are known to swim in the waters off Del Mar’s shores.

Due to the city’s shark bite protocol, the beach is closed for at least 48 hours, according to the AP.

No further information has been released.
