Scary good: ‘Scream’ debuts with $30.6M at box office

“Scream” is scaring up some big numbers during the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The three-day domestic weekend gross for the movie is an estimated $30.6 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The sequel in the slasher franchise is projected to earn $35 million over the weekend, Variety reported. The movie cost just $25 million to produce, the website reported.

Overseas, “Scream” grossed $18 million from 50 markets, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The United Kingdom led with $3.4 million.

Paramount and Spyglass Media backed the reboot, the first new chapter in the “Scream” series in a decade, Variety reported. It shares a title with the 1996 original.

Males led all ticket buyers with 53%, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The website reported that 67% percent of all ticket buyers were between ages 18 and 34.

The new film is the fifth title in the series and os a direct sequel to 2011′s “Scream 4,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. It is the first not to be directed by Wes Craven, who died in 2015.

According to Variety, the film returns familiar faces such as Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who once again are haunted by a serial killer in a Ghostface mask.
