Police said the suspected gunman got into an argument with someone on a Washington, D.C. Metrobus and followed them off the bus before shooting them in the legs, WRC-TV reported.

Devin Jennings, a fellow passenger on the bus, told The Washington Post that he saw a man pull out a gun and put it to another passenger’s head. When the bus stopped, the victim ran off the bus with the suspect following them while firing the gun.

From there, the suspect allegedly went into the Potomac Avenue Metro Station, where he got into an altercation with someone buying a Metrocard before shooting them in the leg, WJLA reported.

Both victims were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police told WJLA.

Jennings told The Washington Post that when he got onto the escalator to enter the Metro station, the gunman ran past him and said, “You be safe today. I’m the killmonger today.”

Police said that the gunman went down the escalator and got into an altercation with a woman, WRC-TV reported. Two transit employees saw what happened and tried to intervene. The suspect shot and killed one of them, police told the station. The other transit employee suffered a hand injury, WJLA reported.

The victim was not identified but was called a hero by the police.

“His heroism has to be recognized here today,” Ashan Benedict, executive assistant chief of police for the Metropolitan Police Department, told WJLA. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family and his heroic actions he took.”

Police said the suspect then tried to get on a train that wasn’t moving, where he was tackled by bystanders, WJLA reported.
