SURREY, England — This was a nutty situation for a squirrel who apparently got too greedy.
The hungry rodent had to be cut free from a bird feeder in the British city of Surrey while searching for food, the BBC reported. The squirrel was able to squeeze through the bars of the feeder, but got caught and was unable to escape.
RSPCA animal rescue officer Louis Horton told ITV that the squirrel thought he had an easy meal. Getting the food was simple enough. Leaving the bird feeder was another matter.
“He was caught by the head and his whole body was inside the feeder,” Horton told the news network. “Fortunately he was uninjured and I was able to free him there and then by cutting away at the metal.
“As soon as he could he scampered off as fast as he was able.”
The RSPCA has urged people to choose a simpler design for bird feeders so squirrels don’t get stuck.
“Unfortunately squirrels trapped in feeders is something we hear about fairly regularly, especially those designed to be ‘anti-squirrel,’” Horton told ITV. “So we would urge people to stick to the more simple designs and to check them regularly.”
