Officers found the girl unresponsive in the rear seat of an SUV at about 5 p.m., WUSA reported.
The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators said the father put the child in the car, then left in a different vehicle to run errands. He returned home and used the SUV to pick up another child from day care when he realized the infant was still in the car.
A medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death, investigators said.
No charges have been filed at this time.
