Carole Adler's son, an Army veteran, was killed while he was training to be a Colorado state trooper.
Taylor Thyfault was just 21 when he was struck and killed by a car involved in a police chase.
Adler and Thyfault texted frequently. After his death, consumed with grief, she continued to text, even though she knew it would be a one-way conversation.
Until one day, when she received a text back.
9 News reports that the reply came from Sgt. Kell Husley, who, in a strange coincidence, was now the person who had her son's old number.
He offered to change it, but Carole Adler said no, that she liked the idea that someone else in law enforcement now had the number.
The two now occasionally text, and Husley says after learning more about Thyfault, he has a newfound faith in his career of 33 years.
Thyfault was promoted posthumously to trooper.
