NASHVILLE, Tenn. - An 11-year-old girl girl sent a 10-year-old school friend a written response to a birthday invitation, saying her dad would not let her go to her friend’s party because her friend is black. (Source: MyFoxMemphis)
“Maybe I will not be able to go to your birthday sleepover because my dad will not let me go because you are black,” the child wrote.
“Not trying to be Races (sic) but my mom let me go,” the note continues, apparently indicating a difference of opinion between her parents.
The note was signed “Happy Birthday!”
The birthday girl’s father, Christopher Jones, said he was upset when he saw the note but didn’t blame the girl who wrote it.
“This is my daughter's first time going to that particular school,” said Christopher Jones, Sr. “They strike up a friendship. So what would seem to be an innocent friendship, never thought anything like this would happen.”
Asked what he would do if he came face-to-face with the other girl's father, his answer was thoughtful.
“I would have to display the love that I'm trying to teach my daughter,” Jones said. “I would have a talk with him. I would. If we could iron out our differences, great! If not, God bless, the man.”
