PLEASANT HILL, La. - Neighbors say a 5-year-old came to their house and told them he thought his dad was dead.
He was right.
"It looked like he was sitting on the side of the bed on his computer, fell backwards and died," Sabine Parish Deputy Coroner Ron Rivers told the Shreveport Times.
Rivers said 10-month-old Betty Jean Fields was stuck under the body and squeezed against a wall.
The Times reports advanced decomposition of the body suggests 43-year-old Jason Fields had been dead for three days. Rivers said the baby was saved because she had just enough space to "breathe, expand its chest up and down."
The deputy said Betty Jean had blisters on her skin and was dehydrated but should make a full recovery.
Rivers said Fields was known to have heart problems.
The children’s mother was in jail on a misdemeanor charge at the time, but was set to be released in a few days.
Reuters reports a judge released her early so she could care for the kids.
