Music City Minute: The Voice, Maren Morris, Sam Hunt

Last night kicked off the semifinals on The Voice and the Top 8 performed including San Antonio’s own Spensha Baker! She sang an awesome cover of Maren Morris’s “My Church”:

After her performance Blake just went crazy saying, "It’s like everything she’s been holding back this entire season, the dam just broke," he went on to say this is the best time for this breakthrough to happen. And that he would be shocked if she wasn’t in the finale.

Make sure you’re watching tonight to see who makes it to the Finals next week. Tonight’s special episode will also include a performance from Blake Shelton and Kane Brown.

Speaking of Maren Morris, she has been writing music for her next album, and was asked recently if getting married has changed her lyrical approach.

She said, "The lyrics are more grown-up. I recorded my debut album when I was 24… I'm 28 now. Doesn't feel like that long ago, but a lot has happened in that chunk of time. I'm in a healthier headspace [and] less judgmental of myself."

Maren also says she's been feeling the pressure to make sure her second album doesn't fall flat. Fortunately, she got some great advice from Keith Urban about that. He told her not to overthink it. He said every album is a snapshot of that artist's life at that time… so "focus on being there"… and then move on.

You can see Maren performing with Zedd & Grey to perform their song "The Middle" at Sunday's "Billboard Music Awards".

This is interesting. Sam Hunt has been out of the music scene for a while, a lot of people are assuming he’s enjoying being a newlywed or maybe working hard on some new music. Well… instead of talking about all the exciting new music he's coming up with, Sam Hunt admits he's got nothing to say.

He said, "It's hard to explain to folks who aren't necessarily writing songs or in this business. When I'm singing a song as an artist, there's only so much that I really want to say or have to say. I haven't had a whole lot to say in the past year.

"So I've been writing songs that I don't really feel are representing me, so I haven't put out a record in the past year."

He has been recording some of those songs, and a new single will be out in the next few weeks. He's also going on tour at the end of the month… and is hoping that'll light the fire.

Sam went on to say, "I'm just looking forward to getting on the road. I have a lot of ambitions but I don't know. I just haven't really found that inspiration yet. I think it's just taking the time to find the inspiration while on the road."
