Music City Minute: Kelsea Ballerini, Cam, & Josh Abbott Band

Yesterday I told you about how this year's "CMT Artists of the Year" special is going to be all female, and that every honoree will be a woman. The females in country music are celebrating that but at the same time female country artists are continuing to speak out about the misguided perception that they're not as bankable as the males.

Billboard recently asked Kacey Musgraves about her album "Golden Hour" getting a CMA Album of the Year nomination, and instead of just talking about how thankful she was, she got real.

Kacey said, "Though I'm extremely honored, I have to say that the number of females included still doesn't satisfy me… especially considering the fact that I feel we're in a current time where more females are making good music."

The frustrating part is their good music isn't getting the exposure it deserves. And the reason is, as usual, because of dollars and cents. Since things are going well, and everyone's getting fat, why stir things up?

She went on to say, "The fear is that money will be lost if something different doesn't succeed. That is so dangerous to a wonderfully rich and beautifully historic genre that, at its core, has traditionally always celebrated the underdog."

And as you may know Cam is another female artist who says the people in charge are afraid of change. She says, "They're terrified. Label heads are saying, 'I don't know how to launch women.' I don't know how you can be in that job if you don't know how to do that. I think you should leave your job."

Her solution is to recruit more diversity INSIDE the industry. Cam said the industry needs to "Get candidates to be CEOs of labels who [are] women, people of color, LGBTQ, anybody who has a different perspective.

"Diverse companies create and support diverse products and can reach more people and are more profitable. It's been proven in other areas."

It sounds like this is something the women in country music are starting to speak more and more about openly, and no longer being afraid to share with fans how things are really going down, so I definitely think it’s something to keep our eyes open for.

Me & My Tea ☕️ I’ve never been a real big drinker. Of course, being an explorer of consciousness means I’ve tried a lot of stuff 🤯 but I’ve never thought mind-altering substances or liquids make you cool or badass. A lot of people on the road get caught up in that culture. They think being a rockstar means getting f*cked up and taking advantage of female fans. Truthfully, they are just self-medicating for feeling vulnerable and lonely, and they justify it by saying the female fans/employees are into it. However, the power dynamic is NOT even. They are using their onstage presence and perceived authority to take advantage of women. Some moms will wait in the parking lot while their daughters get passed around a bus to different band members. I’ve heard of a tour that put all their female crew on one bus, and when one of the women got their period the bus driver would put red lights on outside. The world of touring is not regulated like a normal office, so the artist and their team are responsible for setting rules and enforcing them on the road, but there is no standard, comprehensive practice. We have some work to do. Now that there are cell phones, a lot of overt behavior has started to change, but this needs to be addressed to protect female employees and fans. If you see something wrong, please speak up. There are a lot of good crews out there, and a lot of people who work hard to keep our communities safe, but it’s not a given. Thank you to the guys and gals who are already working to do the right thing 💛

Kelsea Ballerini is currently on vacation celebrating her 25th birthday and of course, has been sharing photos on Instagram. The first vacation celebration photo is Kelsea in a one piece posting on a palm tree on the beach, and the caption reads “25. In Mexico in the rain with 8 of the realest friends I’ve ever had playing card games and drinking tequila and I’m just real happy about this being the way I ring in this new year of my life”.

She’s shared a couple more photos from the vacation including a group shot with all of her friends dressed up probably getting ready to go out to dinner and celebrate:
