COLLABORATIVE EXHIBITION CELEBRATING TEXAS CLAY OPENS AT SAN ANTONIO ART LEAGUE & MUSEUM The San Antonio Art League Museum (SAALM) and the San Antonio Potters’ Guild (SAPG) present TEXAS CLAY: 20/20 VISION, a collaborative exhibition which opens to the public on Sunday, January 12, 2020. This unique dual-concept show features claywork and ceramics from the 25th juried Potters Guild competition as well as a juried selection of clay-inspired wall pieces by members of the San Antonio Art League. The exhibition opens with a reception and an awards presentation on January 12 from 3-5 p.m. at the San Antonio Art League. Juror Paula Owen, President of the Southwest School of Art, selected works from both the Art League submissions and the Potters’ Guild entries to be eligible for awards. Because the exhibit is designed to explore the concept of clay as both metaphor and material, works that were not selected for the juried portion of the show will be shown in the second floor gallery to further the discussion of the theme. While these pieces are not eligible for awards, they make an important contribution to the conversation about the nature of clay through their diversity. TEXAS CLAY: 20/20 VISION will be open from January 12th until February 22nd, 2020. The San Antonio Art League & Museum is located at 130 King William Street across from King William Park. Felder Gallery invites you to come see Where The West Is Fun at our 2nd Annual Contemporary Western Show. This time, we are showcasing works by Miles Glynn from his Wallflower and pulpWESTERN series. The show will run from November 22, 2019 – January 4, 2020 with an opening reception, featuring a personal appearance by the Montana-based artist, on Friday November 22, from 5-7pm. The artist captures the quintessence of what was and what is today’s West in a compelling fusion of realism, fantasy and technology. His work is intricate, meticulous, graceful, and often downright startling. As unexpected, say, as an image of a fragile scrap of wallpaper from an historic ghost town adorning the rough, shaggy pelt of a buffalo. Nope, it shouldn’t work, but yep, it does. Glynn's affinity for traveling long roads, exploration, and going to great lengths to create compelling photographs leads to his success in telling important stories. "I travel to abandoned homesteads, gritty ghost towns, and buildings dripping with history to photograph exquisite wallpapers - these glorious relics of an effort made by people who wished to enjoy a simple bit of beauty inside their dwelling on the harsh and hostile American frontier. But time has had its way with these buildings, and in my own way, I take comfort in helping the grace and grandeur of these relics to live on." Mabuhay Filipino Texans MAY 18, 2019 - FEBRUARY 2, 2020

The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures has prepared an Asian Texan Exhibits and Programs series to highlight three prominent Asian communities in Texas and their unique dual heritage as they preserve their cultural identities while adapting to their new lives in Texas. The institute will begin with the Filipino community, showing "Mabuhay: The Filipino Texans," produced at the ITC with input from the local Filipino community. "Mabuhay" (a Tagalog greeting) presents the story of Filipino presence in Texas, tracing to the 1820s, when Francisco Flores, a Filipino sailing on a Spanish ship, took up residence in Rockport. Mabuhay details Filipino culture, culinary traditions, military service, and other aspects of Filipino life in Texas. Also showing, "Singgalot: The Ties that Bind" originally from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit Service. Singgalot, roughly translated from Tagalog language as "Ties that Bind," initially explores the experience of Filipinos as colonial subjects and nationals, and further examines their struggles to acquire full citizenship as immigrants in the United States throughout the previous century. The exhibition uses rare photographs and illustrations from the National Archives, the Library of Congress and personal collections to provide a glimpse into the dynamic story, culture and contemporary issues of Filipino Americans. Space Science and Exploration Lecture Series 6PM FREE

Dr. Amanda Bayless is a Senior Research Scientist at SwRI (Southwest Research Institute) and Adjunct Professor at UTSA with a background in astronomy. Building on her love of science and math, she found her career in the stars. She decided to pursue science as a career in high school, having been influenced by a physics and chemistry teacher who inspired her. She is the principal investigator for the SuperNovae Analysis Application (SNAP), a database with machine learning capabilities currently under development with the aim of identifying significant supernovae for observation. She is also working on the Spectrograph and Camera for Observations of Rapid Phenomena in the infrared and Optical (SCORPIO) for Gemini Observatories, the L’Ralph Multi-Spectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) on Lucy for NASA, and a small-satellite mission to find leaks in methane production sites and pipelines. She is the coordinator for Women of Science and Engineering at SwRI. In February 2019, she picked up a “40 Under 40” Award from the San Antonio Business Journal recognizing her career success and contributions to her community. Dr. Bayless also has a talent for knitting and crocheting. She meets once a month with a knitting and crochet group that makes blankets for infants at Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital.
