Banksy's shredding prank was supposed to totally destroy artwork

The director’s cut did not quite follow the plan.

The British street artist whose “Girl With Balloon” artwork self-shredded after being sold for $1.4 million at a Sotheby’s auction on Oct. 5, suggested that the painting was supposed to be totally destroyed, and that the machine jammed, the BBC reported.

As art patrons gasped, Banksy’s work began passing through a shredder hidden in its frame and stopped about halfway through its destructive operation.

In a clip posted to YouTube called “Shred the Love: The Director’s Cut,” a man is shown building the frame and then completely shreds a copy of “Girl With Balloon.” A caption in the video notes that “In rehearsals it worked every time.”

“It does look like paper coming out, but there is a chance it could be a fine linen,” said Danielle Howe, who works at John Jones, a London-based canvas supplier, told The New York Times. “(But) it’s difficult to determine without looking at the work in person.”

Alex Branczik, Sotheby's head of contemporary art in Europe, repeated that the auction house was not privy to Banksy’s stunt, the BBC reported.

“Some people think the auction house were in on it, they weren’t,” Banksy said in an Instagram post on Thursday that pointed people to the YouTube video.

In an interview with The Art Newspaper, Branczik said Sotheby’s had asked Pest Control, Banksy’s official authentication body, if the frame could be removed before the auction.

“Pest Control said very clearly: The frame is integral to the artwork,” Branczik told the magazine. "Which it was. Just not in the sort of way that we thought.”

The buyer of the artwork has kept it, the Times reported. It has been renamed “Love Is in the Bin,” after Pest Control issued a new authentication certificate, the newspaper reported.

US Weekly, citing an unnamed source, said the NFL and CBS really wanted the “Work” singer to perform at the high-profile event in 2019 in Atlanta, but she said no because of the kneeling controversy and the NFL’s position on it.

Kapernick, 30, who once admitted to having a crush on Rihanna, 30, according to US, drew national attention, and anger, when he refused to stand for the national anthem early in the 2016 season. Instead, he took a knee to potest police brutality. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback was released by the 49ers after the 2016 season and hasn’t played since.

He filed a grievance against the NFL and team owners last year, accusing them of conspiring to keep him from playing in the NFL.

The singer made the announcement during a news conference at The Country Music Hall of Fame. Only two venues were revealed as tour stops -- St. Louis and Glendale, Arizona. Brooks said dates will be revealed later, adding that tickets for shows at five venues will be available by Christmas, the Tennessean reported.

Brooks said he planned to play 10 to 12 stadium concerts a year for the next three years, the newspaper reported. Many of the concerts will be held at college stadiums, he said.

"I can't think of how to make music more fun other than add sports to it," Brooks said at the news conference. “Our music was built for fun and the live stage."

In addition to the concert tour, Brooks announced a CBS special on Dec. 2 that will feature a one-night event this weekend at Notre Dame Stadium. Brooks will be the first singer to perform in the stadium, the Tennessean reported.

“After the sellout, I thought it could not get any more exciting than this,” Brooks said. “Then, CBS calls and in an instant, the show becomes bigger. This changes everything.”

Caroll Spinney, original Big Bird, retiring from 'Sesame Street'

Caroll Spinney, 84, will perform his roles for the final time Thursday. The puppeteer’s roles will be taken by Matt Vogel, who will perform as Big Bird; and Eric Jacobson, who will play Oscar. Spinney has mentored both men for more than 20 years.

“Big Bird brought me so many places, opened my mind and nurtured my soul,” said Spinney said in a statement. “And I plan to be an ambassador for Sesame Workshop for many years to come. After all, we’re a family! But now it’s time for two performers that I have worked with and respected – and actually hand-picked for the guardianship of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch – to take my alter-egos into their hands and continue to give them life.”

During his 49 years on “Sesame Street,” Spinney appeared on “thousands” of the more than 4,400 episodes of the children’s show, a Sesame Workshop spokesman told the The New York Times.

As Big Bird, Spinney has traveled around the world, visiting China with comedian Bob Hope. He has also performed in the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Germany, Canada and Australia. Big Bird has danced with the Rockettes and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The character also has been featured on a U.S. postage stamp and was named a Living Legend in 2000 by the Library of Congress.

“Since 1969, Caroll’s kind and loving view of the world has helped shape and define this institution,” Jeffrey D. Dunn, Sesame Workshop’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “Throughout his unparalleled career, Caroll Spinney gave something truly special to the world. With deepest admiration, Sesame Workshop is proud to carry his legacy – and his beloved characters – into the future.”

In October 2012, The Atlantic reported that Spinney made about $314,000 a year in his roles on “Sesame Street.” From a personal standpoint, Spinney met his wife, Debra, on the show’s set in 1973, Sesame Workshop said in its statement. They have been married 45 years, the New York Post reported.

“Before I came to Sesame Street, I didn’t feel like what I was doing was very important. Big Bird helped me find my purpose,” Spinney said in a statement. “Even as I step down from my roles, I feel I will always be Big Bird.”

Spinney had to stop puppeteering as Big Bird in 2015 due to problems with his balance, the Times reported. Since then he has limited his roles to voices for Big Bird and Oscar.

His final recordings will be aired on “Sesame Street’s” 50th anniversary in 2020 on PBS, the newspaper reported. Spinney said he will remain a “Sesame Street” ambassador.

“I’ll be 100 years old, doing Muppet stuff,” Spinney told the Times.
