Completed in 1992, The Merry-Go-World installation stages the mysteries of birth, life, and individual futures in an eight sided carousel. Viewers spin a wheel of fortune and step inside one of the eight interiors ranging from the luxury of Paris to middle-class Beijing to the poverty of Houston’s Fifth Ward. Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz traveled the world collecting ideas, materials, and experiences to include in the installation. “Elle” Mono Series #23, a mixed media tableau acquired through the McNay Contemporary Collectors Forum (MCCF) in 2004, relates to the portion on Paris. It is one of a series of unique works made from surplus material collected for the carousel environments.
A photographer, Nancy Reddin met Edward Kienholz in 1972. Soon after, they married and embarked on a lifelong artistic partnership. All work created after they met bears the names of both artists as co-authors and collaborators. Nancy currently lives and works in Hope, Idaho; Houston, Texas; and Berlin, Germany.
Tickets are available for McNay members $10, nonmembers $20, educators and students with an I.D. $5. Reserve space by calling 210.805.1768 or e-mailing education@mcnayart.org. Registration deadline: February 22, noon.
