Introduction:
Ensemble Settecento is pulling out all the stops and presents its first-ever operatic production! Chiefly remembered as a composer of church music, Marc-Antoine Charpentier was nevertheless a master in the composition of dramatic music. His tragédie biblique David et Jonathas beautifully and deftly applies a Biblical story, that of David and his ill-fated friendship with King Saul's son Jonathan, to the architecture of the five-act tragédie en musique as perfected by none other than the incomparable Jean-Baptiste Lully. Originally presented as an intermède between the acts of a Latin-language spoken drama on the same story, Ensemble Settecento's singers will present this unique work in a semi-staged format, supported by the full, sumptuous sounds of the French baroque orchestra. A Texas premiere, Charpentier's "David et Jonathas" isn't to be missed!Â
